I was on it. Only for the BMW parade lap, and we were stuck behind an X5 any time the gap between us closed (this happened frequently), but for two 17-year-old kids....apexing through Big Bend and the Esses at a good speed was more than exciting.

Is that an E36 M3? When you're 18 don't waste any time signing up for an HPDE with the BMW CCA. A "parade" lap in an E36 stuck behind an SUV would be blue-balls levels of disappointment.

On one hand, that's very cool. On the other hand, that sucks. The X5 part, I mean.

It is.

I already did the "Survive the Drive" thing run through Skip Barber and BMWCCA, which is essentially a HPDE for much less and at a more desolate location (definitely worth it- they even gave breakfast and lunch!). I did that in my old Audi though, which was waaaaay less fun than the M3 would have been.

I'm currently a helmet away from starting autocrossing though, which I'm very excited for.

Nice write up. I somehow missed that! I am also a sedan enthusiast!! Here's (a crappy picture of) mine wearing its work boots:

I have only ridden in one E36 M3 and that was a LTW with an S50B32 swap. It was life changing, but I'm also now completely ruined on E36es. BMW club problems.

I've never heard of the Survive the Drive program but it sounds a lot like the Tire Rack Street Survival program that's also sponsored by local BMW CCA chapters. Don't text and drive. No, really, don't. Especially not in an M3.

I instructed at a local TRSS a few weeks ago. What an amazing opportunity for new drivers! I imagine they had some exercise at the end of yours where you got to blast around basically an autocross course? They did that after ours and of course everyone wanted a ride in my car, including my student's father. Here's the hoonage that resulted. My car is no good at cones (and neither am I really). I'm gonna stick to my weekends full of 25 minute track sessions I think!

Gorgeous E90!

The "Survive the Drive" thing was literally Lime Rock's name for the TSS, and that's where I signed up. A couple months later I was up at Consumer Reports in Colchester, CT and was having the time of my life. More or less the same sort of course demonstrated in your video, but it lasted all the way down the length of the drag strip AND snaked around the track Consumer Reports used for their shakedowns. Very cool, and it would have been even better had I not been in my very slow and not so sporty Audi.

My instructor was awesome too...I think his name was Bob? Drove a gorgeous Imola Red ZHP, and had apparently owned a couple E30 M3s in recent times. Definitely a fantastic program.

Hahaha nice! I bet you had SO much fun in that Audi, despite the fact that it wasn't a rocket. Oh, and you probably learned a thing or two while you were out there enjoying yourself =)
